Today we were asked to post five of our favorite read aloud books, whether they were read to us, or we read them to others. Below are my favorites that I have either read aloud to siblings, or would read aloud to my children. How many more times can I say read aloud in this post? The person who counts them all and comments with the number gets a cookie! π So hop on your bicycle and Iβll take you to my favorite reading place, the park.
At Home In Mitford by Jan Karon
THIS BOOK. Well, really, this series is the bomb. If you havenβt already heard of it, I donβt know what rock you have been hiding under, but get your head out and go find a copy! Think small town, diverse and adorable characters, just between friends antics and trying to run a parish of these folks. Father Tim is an adorable and loving Episcopal priest to his little flock and the ups and downs of MItford will have you holding your side with laughter, crying small floods of empathetic tears, and just wanting to hug every character in the book (except for the ones you are supposed to hate of course).
The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner
This book was a feature of my childhood. I donβt even remember how many times I read it, but whatever you do, make sure you read the ORIGINAL boxcar children, not this newfangled rewritten stuff. (Snubs nose at the inferiority and presumption) (honestly though, i havenβt read them, so I canβt really judge) but I LOVED this book! Give this to your young tween an have them read it out loud. Itβs fantastic and will keep their interest, and you might even have them begging to get a boxcar of their own or build a fort out in the forest and live there. π
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
If you know anything about me, you know that this book is the love of my life. It is the book that started it all, that created a real hunger and passion in me to write stories such as this beauty and share them with the world. It was the one that taught me so much and had me crying, laughing and cringing by turns at the life story, joys, sorrows, triumphs and tribulations of the March girls. If you havenβt read this book, please donβt tell me. I literally start freaking out if I hear that someone didnβt read or like it. Just ask my sisters. LOL!
Jack and Jill by Louisa May Alcott
Another Louisa May Alcott lovely masterpiece. This one is great for younger children and would make a fantabulous read aloud because it is about two youngsters who got themselves into trouble and the way they handle the consequences of their actions. Surrounded by the support of their little friends and family, we find Jack and Jill laid up for quite some time which is a bit of a trial when it comes to these two busy youngsters. With Alcottβs mix of humor, adorableness and love. Your whole family will enjoy this sweet tale.
Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
Need I even go into detail of why this is a great read-aloud? I feel like everyone and their dog has heard about Anne and her dramatic flair. And if you havenβt, Iβll say it again, WHAT ROCK HAVE YOU BEEN HIDING UNDER?!?!?!? You just have to read this book. I hate to be one of those people, but just once in your life, I beg you. *wipes tears* please go read it!

I remember reading loads of the Boxcar Children books!! We have tons of them, but I don’t think it’s the whole set. π I’m sure if I read them now, I would find a lot of faults! π Still very good memories!! π
Anne of Green Gables, a rare instance in which the movie was just as good as the book! My sister read this book aloud to us on a trip to West Virginia and we all fell in love with Prince Edward Island all over again! Best read aloud ever!
I’ve read all of these! I’ve only read the first two Mitford books, but they’re lovely! I love how they’re so nostalgicy. And I read the original Boxcar children and loved them SO DANG MUCH. Ahh, the memories.
I was debating which of Louisa May Alcott’s books to share on my post because I like them all! And yes, of course “Anne of Green Gables.” I might have read one or two of the Boxcar Children, but don’t remember them. And the Mitford books are at the library and as soon as I can get them to fit in my reading challenge (the first one isn’t a mystery by chance, is it?), I’m going to start them.

I had never even heard of this series until Kate mentioned it on Goodreads earlier this year, I think. And I have been wanting to try it ever since. But this month’s category is “mystery” so . . .

I think Iβve read all of these except the Jack and Jill one. The boxcar children is actually the first book I read by myself!
I’ve read all of these but Jack and Jill, and I already put that one on my TBR from Erika’s list. π Don’t worry, I liked both Little Women and Anne of Green Gables very much. π

Ah — Little Women! I first received a copy of this book (unedited — the original :D) when I was 11 — and managed to read it once a year until two years ago. It is so. good. I have two sisters that don’t like it, and two more who won’t even attempt to read it — so I can sympathize with your feelings on it!
The Anne Series was a favourite of mine until I read the last one. It seemed melancholy, but I’m pretty sure it was because I was so sad that I had reached the last book and would have no more adventures with Anne and her children. I was kinda attached =) I have contemplated re-reading it, but never have…..while I’ve re-read all the others multiple times ;D
Ahhh, the Boxcar Children were my child-hood – such wonderful memories, those books gave me my love for mystery.
I grew up on most of these! Not Mitford, though – I only heard about it through Goodreads friends.
I can’t even describe how special and wonderful it has been to read Narnia and The Hobbit aloud to my youngest sister!! We’ve really bonded through the experience and over the stories.

Victoria I have read all your choices except. The Mitford Books. I do have the first book and will definately read it. I have not read all of The Boxcar Children series. I do have a lot of the series but not the complete set. I bought a lot of them at my library sale[unfortunately,they no longer have book sales]. Jack and Jill,Little Women are lovely reads. I have the complete set of Anne of Green Gables but I too agree that the last book was a downer.
