I am here today to talk to you about something that I told myself from the very beginning of my writing journey and something that you should be telling yourself every day, every time you pull out that pen or sit at that laptop. It’s more important than you can possibly know and I want to make sure that you get it drilled into your skull now and that belief will only grow and become stronger as you pursue this dream that you are making into a reality called writing.
You are unique and your unique voice needs to be heard. Comparison is a large, real and sometimes overwhelming enemy on any creative journey and I want to tell you that it is going to all be okay. You are you and that is the most important thing that you can be. Your unique voice is what this world needs, not something that is like the last person or like the next person.
The reviews are going to say different. There are going to be a clamor for you to change this, change that, write more realistically, write more imagination, write short sentences, write long sentences. Stop bending genre’s, can’t your book fit in one for crying out loud? You can’t have elements of fantasy in a historical fiction book. . . blah blah blah.
But here’s the deal. Why ever not? That is what creativity is. It is creative. You don’t have to listen to those voices and you don’t have to do what they say. Know when to stand strong by your guns and trust that what you are putting on paper is uniquely you and your vision for this book.
Your story is your story and no one should ever be able to change that.
When it comes down to writing, you need to shut all those voices down, because they will follow you and they will jump into your thoughts and try to drag you down as you try to put your words to paper.
I’m here to give you permission. Write whatever it is you want to write. Whether you publish it or not, whether it is a best seller or the lowest rated book on amazon. Write what God and your heart come up with. You will never be disappointed in yourself and you will be more proud than anyone who ever cowed to the “you should’s”
I am not writing this from the perspective of a best-seller who happened to write the perfect niche novel and now has thousands in royalties coming in every month. I am writing this to you from the perspective of someone who has done what I wrote above and who still doesn’t make more than a dime or so here and there from her books. But I am proud as I write this. Because I am proud of the book babies that my imagination and God’s inspiration has birthed into this world and I am proud of the times that I said I wouldn’t change something that was important to me.
But there is that second part that I alluded to. While negativity and comparison drains the life right out of your creativity, joy and writing, God’s inspiration does the exact opposite. Invite Him into the process. He will blow your mind every time. When we invite the Holy Spirit into our process, He fills it with so much purpose, joy and INSPIRATION. Your brain literally runs wild. Because God himself is the Creator and Maker of all. When we choose to partner with Him in our creativity, there really is not other outcome than amazingness!
So shut out those naysayers, listen to your Father’s voice and go write! Be true to who God created you to be and you will be so proud of the outcome. Every. Single. Time.
By God’s Grace,
