This book was very different in a lot of ways from Roseanna’s other more recent work. She has spent a lot of time in London, which I have totally been here for. But when she switched it up and I saw she was going to publish this book, I got super excited. I grew up reading books that were not just about the civil war, but were written during the actual time period and I got a very interesting and unique view of the war, getting to experience through literature, many different sides, from the perspective of people who had not only written about it, but actually lived it.

That being said, Roseanna did an incredibly stellar job. I devoured this book within a few days (super unusual for me) and it was so totally worth it. The writing style is one of my favorite things about this book. It was romantic, had qualities of books from times past and had the most charming, flowery feel without being too much.

And the story.

Be still my heart.

This book did not disappoint. The themes, messages, descriptions, characters. . . everything was absolutely top notch. I literally have nothing negative to say about this book whatsoever. The delicateness, but also directness with which Roseanna handled some of the subjects was superb and I found myself near tears several times, on the edge of my seat and even wanting to smack a certain suitor over the head with a frying pan.

While reading this on the beach, I turned to my mom, explained a few of the scriptural and biblical messages the author was tying into the book and I said, “this is the kind of fiction I want and love to read.” The bible is breathed so beautifully into this book and the way each character relates to the Lord and encounters His love and grace is my favorite thing about this book. I loved that the author even touched on prophetic dreams. Just so much yes.

If you love historical fiction or romances, you will not want to miss this masterpiece. It will not disappoint!

On a side note, I will be taking a trip to Charleston and Fort Sumpter next week and am excited to see some of this book come to life in real places!
